Columbus dance studio conducting free Haitian cultural workshop

Two Columbus residents are hosting a free Haitian Imagination Dance and Cultural Workshop on Saturday at Dancers Studio Inc., 2158 Cottage Ave. in Columbus.

The gathering from 1 to 4 p.m. is a mixture of events. It’s a workshop of activities revolving around dance and Haitian culture for youngsters. And for others, it’s a chance to try Haitian coffee and shop for handmade crafts and jewelry — or even make a donation to Imagine Missions, an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Plus, people will have the opportunity at 1:30 p.m. to listen to Melissa Young, an Ohio school teacher turned Haitian orphanage director. She will speak about her unique experiences of being handed leadership of the 100-child Imagine Missions.

Kristen Bridgeman and Kim Vehslage, former dancers in the local troupe, organized the event. Bridgeman found herself in Haiti helping at the orphanage on a spring break trip. Her involvement there led to leading dance classes for the children.

“I could hardly believe my luck when I learned that the kiddos with whom I was spending time on a spring break trip not only knew of ballet, but also were hungry to learn and dance,” Bridgeman said.
