Columbus native joins city police force

The newest member of the Columbus Police Department is familiar with the community he’ll serve.

Drake Maddix, 21, a native of Columbus and a graduate of Columbus North High School, will begin his training as a city police officer after a short orientation period.

Maddix has attended Indiana University in Bloomington, where he will earn a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in December.

While working toward his degree, Maddix became a sworn officer with the Indiana University Police Department, where he has served as a cadet and part-time police officer.

Drake was sworn in by Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop during a Board of Public Works and Safety meeting on Tuesday at Columbus City Hall.
