Fire damages Marr Road home under renovation

A fire in a vacant home in the 3000 block of North Marr Road caused about $100,000 in damage, Columbus firefighters said.

Firefighters were sent to 3035 N. Marr Road at about 3:24 p.m. Saturday after a passerby saw fire coming from the back of the home and called 911, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

Heavy fire and smoke were coming from the back of the single-story stone home, which was in the process of being restored, Wilson said. Firefighters initially used water through a window to reduce the interior fire and then went through a rear door to completely extinguish it.

Damage to the interior included the basement staircase, utilities room and kitchen, Wilson said. There was also damage to roof joists and decking at the rear of the home.

The owner, Elizabeth Rivera, told firefighters the home restoration project had been nearly complete before the fire occurred.
