Panthers cruise in tennis opener

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County won all five matches in straight sets Monday in a season-opening 5-0 win against Milan, giving Gary Yeager a victory in his boys tennis coaching debut.

Weston Miller beat Jordan Burton 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Justin Gasper downed Brent Quatmann 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Austin Mills topped Jacob Laub 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles for the Panthers.

Luke Ertel and Briar Davis beat Peyton Cann and Carter Wade 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Thomas Schuler and Bryce Kirchner downed Ethan Hannert and Treyton Robbins 6-1, 6-3.

Lancers edge Eagles

OSGOOD — Edinburgh pulled out a close fifth set to win its season opener at Jac-Cen-Del.

The Lancers overcame two one-set deficits. Scores were 20-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13.

Lancers take 12th

SHELBYVILLE — The Edinburgh girls opened the season with a 12th-place finish in the Blue River Park Early Bird meet.

Emily Davis led the Lancers with a 77th-place finish in 28 minutes, 18.33 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Blythe Carman took 86th in 29:31.70, while Destiney Ramey was 92nd (29:55.36), Lili Ervin 99th (30:29.46), Allie Schooler 102nd (30:34.80) and Abby Schooler 119th (39:32.33).

Edinburgh’s lone boys runner, Isaiah Estes, finished 126th in 26:05.12.

GIRLS SOCCER

Pioneers top Trinity

CLARKSVILLE — Maddie Roark scored a first-half goal, but that was all for Trinity Lutheran in a 9-1 loss at Providence.

The Pioneers outshot the Cougars 30-5. Trinity’s Hailley Peters recorded 13 saves.
