Jennings man arrested on animal-neglect charge

NORTH VERNON — A North Vernon man was arrested on misdemeanor animal-neglect charges after his dog was found without food or water with an untreated wound around its neck.

Ian Amburgey, 23, is being held in the Jennings County Jail in lieu of $605 bond after his arrest at about 7:23 p.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of Hayden Pike, said North Vernon Police Department Sgt. Andrew Richmond, who is also the department’s K9 officer.

North Vernon police went to Amburgey’s home on a tip about a malnourished border collie-type dog in his yard, Richmond said.

Officer Kyle Hall found the dog in poor health, tied to a chain in the backyard. The neck wound was caused by a dog collar which had been cutting into its neck, Richmond said.

Hall immediately called Jennings County Animal Control to obtain help for the dog, but the animal had to be euthanized due to its condition, Richmond said.

An investigation is continuing into the incident and more charges could be pending, Richmond said.
