Xavier Maurice Scrogham, 18, of Hope, passed away late Monday, August 29, 2016.

Xavier was a 2016 graduate of Ben Davis High School of Indianapolis. Xavier attended Columbus East High School for three-and-a-half years and was a proud member of the 2013-14 Columbus East 4-A state champion football team. He was very proud of his championship ring and always wore it proudly. He also participated on the Columbus East track team, competing in high jump and pole vaulting. He was also a member of the Royalty Athletix competitive cheer team.

Xavier was a very personable and polite young man who enjoyed hanging out with friends, playing video games, working on cars and anything automotive or technical. He also enjoyed flying his drone and was a good cook.

Xavier was born Feb. 1, 1998, and is survived by his parents, Kalvyn Johnson-Bey (Joddi Miller) of North Vernon and Carleen Scrogham of Columbus; sisters, Hannah Scrogham of Columbus and Sierra Scrogham of Indianapolis; and a brother, Damarcis Scrogham of Columbus; uncle, Jason Hoover of Columbus; great-aunts, Delores (Warren) Burks-Bey, Sarah (William) Jones-Bey and Shelly (Anthony) Young, all of Hope, Muriel Jenkins-Bey of Hopewell, Virginia, and Alice (Hannibal) Frazier-Bey of Prince George, Virginia; great-uncles, Reuben Johnson-Bey of Chicago, Elihu (LeeDrella) Johnson-Bey and Ishmel Johnson-Bey of Hope, Samuel (Angie Mings) Johnson-Bey of Columbus, Leon Jenkins-Bey, Elijah Jenkins-Bey of Prince George, Virginia, Ravanna Jenkins-Bey, Roosevelt Jenkins-Bey and William Jenkins-Bey of Hopewell, Virginia; along with a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Xavier had some very close friends who he considered brothers including, Josiah Edwards of Indianapolis, Cody Miller, Taylor (TJ) Branigan, Jacob Mee and Michael “Garrett” McGaha, all of Hope. Xavier was also very close to Samantha Brown of Hope, who was like a sister. Other close friends include Rico Lewis, Jason Groover, Josiah “Joe” Torres and James Shepherd all of Columbus.

Xavier was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Harry and Alta Hoover, Charles Freeman and Hazel McKinney, James (Sr) and Harriet Johnson-Bey and Andrew and Annie Jenkins-Bey.

The viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Norman’s Funeral Home in Hope. Burial will follow at Sharon Cemetery in Hope, followed with a repast at Temple No. 55 located at 4182 N. County Road 700E, Hope.

Memorial contributions may be given to Norman Funeral Home to help defray funeral expenses as he was not at his job long enough to acquire life insurance.
