William R. Bowen, 89, of Columbus, died at 4:45 p.m. Friday, September 16, 2016, at the home of his daughter in New Palestine.

Mr. Bowen retired from U.S. Steel as a heavy equipment mechanic after 40 years of service.

He was an Army veteran of WWII and a member of the American Legion and NRA.

The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Hubert Nolen officiating. Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to time of service Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Hope Moravian Cemetery with military honors presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Mr. Bowen was born in Clarion, Pennsylvania, Oct. 26, 1926, to Elmer and Mary Kahle Bowen.

He married Rhea M. Gabler Oct. 10, 1948. She preceded him in death on Oct. 31, 2015.

Survivors include his children, Barbara Mahoney of Columbus, William (Karen) Bowen of Columbus and Cynthia (Tim) Lane of New Palestine; grandchildren, Alex Mahoney, Jason (Rachel) Bowen, Joshua (Jenny) Bowen, Brian (Rebecca) Bowen, Brittany Bowen, Jessica (Justin) Berisford and Erica (Kyle) Glick; great-grandsons, Greyson Lee and Max Bowen; and a brother, Arthur (Ruth) Bowen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brothers, Dallas, Everett, Earl, Dave and Harry Bowen.
