REMC warns customers of scam

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County REMC said it received a report Monday about a scam in which people pretending to be from the utility company ask consumers to provide credit card or other financial account information over the phone.

They called a local business stating the customer owes money on their account and will have electric service shut off unless payment information is provided immediately over the phone, REMC said.

REMC reminds customers to never give credit card or banking information over the phone, unless they initiate the call to the utility.
