Athletes of the Week

MALE

Mitchell Burton, Columbus North senior football player

Burton carried 21 times for 216 yards and four touchdowns Friday to lead the Bull Dogs to a 59-13 rout of Terre Haute North. He also caught a pass for 25 yards.

His performance last week: “It felt like the offense and the O-line were more connected on what we were doing and where everything was supposed to be, so it worked out pretty good.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I have meetings with (track) coach (Lou) Sipe, and we go through formations and where everyone is supposed to be and what formations they’re running. That’s been helping out the past three or four weeks.”

Favorite drink: “Gatorade”

Favorite food: “Pasta shells”

Favorite book: “Old Man and the Sea”

Favorite class: “Weight training”

Role model: “My dad (Steve Burton)”

Best advice: “Always do my best and work hard, and things will work out in the end.”

Athletics goal: “Play football and possibly track in college and eventually maybe something higher than that.”

If you could travel anywhere: “I’d probably say Hawaii because I’ve never been there, and I’ve heard it’s really nice.”

FEMALE

Emma Bawinkel, Brown County senior golfer

Bawinkel fired a 5-over-par 77 Saturday at Country Oaks to set an 18-hole school record and qualify as an individual for this weekend’s state finals.

Her performance last week: “I want to go lower, of course, but I was pretty proud of it and I give it all to God that I did it because I couldn’t have done it without him.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I kind of just put on music before I go out to the driving range, and I’ll hit little short shots to kind of get warmed up. Then, I’ll go into full swing shots on the driving range.”

Favorite drink: “I’ve started to drink a Starbucks coffee before every match. Coffee seems to calm me down instead of make me all crazy.”

Favorite food: “Chicken”

Favorite book: “Hatchet”

Favorite class: “Literature”

Role model: “I watch a lot of LPGA and look up to them a lot. I’d probably say my favorite LPGA player at the moment is Gerina Piller.”

Athletics goal: “Right now, I’m just thinking ‘Do my best and let God do the rest.’ I have nothing to lose, so the goal is to be calm and collected out there and just shoot my best that I can.”

If you could travel anywhere: “I want to go to Hawaii really badly. I know there’s a lot of good courses in Hawaii. It would be a dream to play in Hawaii.”
