Local drivers dominated the racing action Oct. 1 at Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon on the final night of racing for this year.
Brian Shewmaker of Columbus won the Crate Late Model Feature, Austin Perry of Columbus won his first career Hornet main event and Shayne Wilson of North Vernon won his first career feature in the Super Stock class.
Shewmaker ran away with the Crate Late Model race, winning by several car lengths over Brad Erwin of Crothersville and Curt Bennett of Clarksville. Trent Low of North Vernon was fourth, with Mike Bechelli of Elizabethtown placing fifth. Shewmaker’s car is sponsored by Wedan Street and Performance, B&D Lawn Care, Slicker Graphics and Rocketman Race Bodies.
Perry, a rookie in the Hornet division, won his first feature taking the victory over Tony Napier of North Vernon, Kobe Derringer of Commiskey, Cordell Moore and Gage Clark of Cross Plains. Perry’s car is sponsored by Drain Master, Tony Ogle Express, Cain’s Tree Service, Donnie’s Paintings, The Hornet Factory, Willie’s Speed Shop and Johnson Tire.
Wilson, the son and grandson of two former Twin Cities track champions Jeff and Merrill Wilson, captured his first career win by winning the Super Stock main event. Justin Walters of North Vernon was second. He was followed by Jeremy Helton of Paris Crossing, Justin Patterson of North Vernon and Randy Smith. Wilson’s car is sponsored by Wilson Timber Consulting, Phillip Gerster Trucking, Jim Beeman Lumber, Brice Fairchild Livestock, North Vernon Auto Shine, Brewer Livestock and Right Auto Parts.
Lee Hobbs of Mitchell was victorious in the Open Wheel Modified feature. Jeff Deckard of Ellettsville was second, with Mike Bechelli claiming third place. Eric Morris of Hartford City was fourth, with Trent Green of Milton, Kentucky, rounding out the top five.
Several drivers win at Brownstown
Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville won his first career Super Late Model feature Oct. 1 at Brownstown Speedway. O’Neal, a third-generation racer, won over Alan Magner of North Vernon and Joe Godsey of Edinburgh. Chad Stapleton of Edinburgh was fourth, and Jared Bailey of Bedford completed the top five.
Austin Burns of Morgantown won the Indiana Pro Late Model main event over Justin Shaw of Whiteland, Remington Gill of Mitchell, Marty O’Neal of Spencer and Isaac Rainey of Bedford.
Randy Lines of Marion won his first Brownstown Modified feature race. Matt Boknecht was second, with Jeremy Owens of North Vernon, Marty O’Neal and Jay Humphrey Jr. of Bloomington rounding out the top five.
Steve Peeden of Paragon, like Lines, won his first Brownstown feature, claiming the Super Stock main event. Aaron Fields of Taylorsville was second, with Jamey Wilson of Seymour coming across the line in third. David Brewer of Seymour was fourth, and Tim Schumpe of Vallonia was fifth.
Kevin Applegate of North Vernon won his first Pure Stock feature of the season. Austin Burton of Edinburgh was the runner-up, with Jim Ruddick placing third. Jeremy Huebner of Loogootee was fourth, with Houston Roark of Dupont taking fifth.
John Mayer Jr. of Edinburgh took top honors in the Hornet division. Jacob Owens was second, with Lee Stephenson of Columbus taking third. Zach Burton of Edinburgh was fourth, and taking fifth was, Andrew Roark of Dupont.

USAC at Lawrenceburg
Josh Hodges won the AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car feature on Oct. 1 at Lawrenceburg Speedway. The Tigeras, New Mexico, native earned $10,000 for his win in the Fall Nationals. Hodges was followed across the finish line by Chris Windom, Dave Darland, Kyle Cummins and Justin Grant.
Brady Bacon continues to lead the series points standings heading into the event Oct. 15 at the Terre Haute Action Track in Terre Haute.
Also at Lawrenceburg’s season finale, Matt Hamilton won the Modified feature race. He was followed to the checkers by Gary Dunaway, David Cook, Brad Wieck and Rod Smith.
UMP Nationals at Eldora
Mason Zeigler won the UMP Late Model Fall Nationals event at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, on Oct. 1. Brian Ruhlman finished second to Zeigler, who scored his first-ever win at Eldora. Duane Chamberlain was third, with Mike Spatola and Casey Noonan completing the top five drivers.
In the UMP Modified finale, it was Jacob Hawkins taking the feature win. Brian Ruhlman finished second, followed by K.C. Burdette, Nick Hoffman and Derrick Ramey.
Florence back in action tonight
Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky, which has been idle since the Sunoco North/South 100 back in August, is scheduled to race tonight with Super Late Models, Crate Models, Modifieds and Hornets.
Florence closes out its 2016 racing season on Oct. 22 with the Fall 50 for Super Late Model and Modifieds, with each division paying $5,000 to win. For more information, visit florencespeedway.com.
