Shirley E. Handley, 82, of Columbus, died at 6:45 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2016, at Four Seasons Health Care Center.
Mrs. Handley graduated from Columbus High School, eventually working at Irwin Management for 32 years, until her retirement. Shirley had a great passion about her schooling while attending Ray-Vogue School of Design. She was an avid antique collector, enjoyed attending musicals and going to numerous stage shows with her husband, Curtis. Shirley was a fan of Columbus North High School basketball and a longtime member of North Christian Church. She served on the Columbus Township Advisory Board and held the position of Columbus Township Trustee.
She was a past member of the Kiwanis Club, Business and Professional Women’s Club and Order of the Eastern Star. Her active role in Bartholomew County Historical Society, along with many other organizations and committees within the community, will always be remembered.
Shirley was born in Columbus, Indiana, December 18, 1933, to the late Eugene W. and Madelynn L. Dempsy Smith.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Curtis; son, Thomas W. Handley; sister-in-law, Anna King; and nephew, Ron (Brenda) King, all of Columbus, Indiana; niece, Valerie King of Atlanta, Geogia; and a special family friend, June (Chuck) Corbin of Columbus, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Delane Smith, and brother-in-law, Benjamin King.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2016, at North Christian Church, 850 Tipton Lane, Columbus, with the Rev. Larry Rowe and Annette Barnes officiating. Calling will be held Thursday, October 13, 2016, from 3 until 7 p.m. at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street and from noon until service time Friday at church. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
