Police arrest Columbus man on burglary charge

Columbus police arrested a local man after they caught him attempting to use a saw to break into and burglarize the Rural King store in Columbus.

Jeremy S. Vanantwerp, 34, 1913 Beam Road, was arrested on a preliminary charge of burglary and is on a 48-hour-hold without bond at the Bartholomew County Jail, officials said.

Columbus police were called to Rural King, 2985 N. National Road, to respond to an alarm at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

When officers arrived, they heard the sound of a saw cutting into the building, Harris said. A short time later, the suspects saw the officers and fled into the building, Harris said. A few minutes later, Vanantwerp was taken into custody as he attempted to flee the store, Harris said. The second suspect was not located.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call Detective LaShawn Tyler at 812-376-2661.
