North sporting large team, new coach

The Columbus North boys swimmers will try to return to the top of Conference Indiana and the North Sectional this winter after finishing second in both last season.

The Bull Frogs have about 50 boys out for the team, including six divers. They also have a new coach in Logan Schaefer, who will lead them into three meets next week, beginning with a Monday battle against Jennings County.

“I think we’re coming together quite well,” Schaefer said. “It’s a large team, which is a good thing. We’re getting very excited for our upcoming meets next week.”

Senior Kaemon Jiles is a two-time state diving qualifier and finished 13th at state last year. Senior Angel Torres Martinez finished 27th at state in the 50-yard freestyle.

Torres Martinez and senior Adam Zhuang swam on the ninth-place 200 freestyle relay and 14th-place 400 freestyle relay teams at state. Sophomore Jared Carroll swam on the 400 freestyle relay in the sectional and the state prelims.

Sophomore Sam Russell just missed qualifying for state after finishing second in the sectional in the 500 freestyle. Other top returners include seniors Jackson Swain and Paco Cena Zavala, juniors Thomas Goble and Drew Thompson and junior diver Grant Fehribach.

Seniors Harrison Griffin and Jackson Nagel, junior Charlie Allen and sophomore Paxton Rush also return. North has promising newcomers in freshmen Nicholas Green, Evan Patterson and Auysh Panda.

“We do have a lot of potential incoming contributors that are looking to jump into the lineup and find their place,” Schaefer said. “As we come together, I think we’ll find those places, and if we come together, I think we have a very good shot at swimming well at sectional and competing with Bloomington South and being a top placing team at high school state.”

Columbus East

The Olympians have added 20 new swimmers to go along with a nucleus of nine returning swimmers from a team that finished seventh in the Hoosier Hills Conference and fifth in the North Sectional.

“They just love it, and when they are in the water, they go after it,” East coach David Fribley said. Their attitude in practice is that they’re determined to show what they can do.”

Seniors Austin Guse, Derek Alexander and Austin Smith and sophomore Evan Weineke swam on the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay teams that made the sectional finals. Senior Chris Borowski would have been on those teams, but missed sectional because of an illness.

Junior Gavin Roberts, sophomores Ryan Singer and Zach Stadler and senior Bryce Gibson are the other returners. The newcomers are led by freshman Bryce Eckelman.

“These new kids have kind of picked it up in the first couple weeks,” Fribley said. “They’ve gotten addicted to it. They are going after it, so it’s going to be really interesting to see what these kids can achieve by the end of the year.”

Jennings County

The Panthers will have a small team this year with only about 10 kids.

Sophomore Peyton Moore and junior divers Austin and Cameron Mills were sectional finalists. Cameron Mills also swims.

Jennings coach Chaz Wilson also will look to sophomores Trey Hundley, Jesse Wallace and Beau Harriman and junior Evan Dubben.

The Panthers finished fourth in last year’s Floyd Central Sectional.

“The team is looking strong,” Wilson said. “Everybody is doing what we want them to do right now. We want to be finishing better in conference, finishing better in sectional, breaking records and all-around getting better as a team.”
