Meet officers of new submarine

Local residents have the opportunity to meet officers who will command the new USS Indiana, a Virginia Class fast-attack nuclear submarine that is the first named after the state in more than 70 years.

The officers will be at the Upland Columbus Pump House, 148 Lindsey St. in Columbus, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. The event is free.

Nearly 100 Indiana businesses are involved in manufacturing something for the submarine program or supporting construction of ships. The officers are traveling across the state to raise awareness about the USS Indiana SSN 789 and to engage Hoosiers to learn more about the ship named after them.

In addition to the Pump House visit Wednesday, the officers also will be in the area at Indiana University Memorial Stadium in Bloomington from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, and the The Exchange Restaurant Pub and Kitchen in New Albany from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
