March Madness early for elementary hoops fans

It’s only January, but a taste of March Madness begins this week in Columbus — at the elementary level.

The Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. Elementary Basketball League will sponsor first- and second-round tournament games Tuesday and Wednesday at various grade schools.

During the early rounds, the boys will play at 5:30 p.m. and the girls will compete immediately afterward.

Those 14 games will lead up to the Super Saturday championship games and cheerleading competitions at Columbus North High School, 1400 25th St., on Saturday.

Here is what’s on the Saturday agenda:

Two girls tournament semifinal games will be at 10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. in the main gym. Winners will meet in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. at the same location

The boys tournament semifinal games are scheduled for 8 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. in the main gym. The championship game will get underway at 6 p.m.

The Super Saturday elementary school cheerleading competition begins at 2 p.m., also in the main gym.

All 11 of the district’s elementary schools will compete in cheerleading: Schmitt, Southside, Smith, Clifty Creek, Parkside, Taylorsville, Rockcreek, Columbus Signature Academy —Lincoln, Columbus Signature Academy — Fodrea, Richards and Mt. Healthy.

The entire event will be broken up into three sessions: Morning semi-finals, afternoon cheerleading, and evening finals, event coordinator Dennis Pierce said.
