John R. Moore, 81, of Seymour, died 6:45 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, at Lutheran Community Home after a three-month illness.

Born Jan. 17, 1936, in Seymour, he was the son of Ruth (Wehmiller) and Leonard “Skeets” Moore. He married Donna Barringer on Jan. 17, 1960, in Seymour, and she survives.

John graduated from Seymour High School in 1954, where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track, and played minor league baseball in the Kansas City Athletics organization. He also served two years in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Seymour Elks Lodge 462 and of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was a former elder in the church and served on the Heritage Foundation at Immanuel.

John began his work career with Metropolitan Life Insurance in New Albany. He later founded John Moore Agency in 1975 and worked there until his retirement in 1998.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; children, David (Shannon) Moore, Craig (Linda) Moore and Andrew Moore; six grandchildren, Ashley (Nick) Kuklenski, Nicholas Moore, Natalie (Parker) Wiethoff, Chad (Madeleine) Moore, Amanda Moore and Jacob Moore; and two great-grandchildren, Brady and Riley Kuklenski.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter-in-law, Julie Moore.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. It will be officiated by ministers Ralph Blomenberg, Jimmy Rodriguez and Philip Block. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Voss Funeral Home and one hour before the service Friday at the church. Burial will be at the Lutheran Cemetery.
