Inmate charged with battering jail officer

Two charges of battery have been filed against a Bartholomew County Jail inmate after an incident that resulted in the injury of a jail officer.

Dustin Leatherbury, 28, 2925 10th St., Columbus, was charged with battery on a public servant resulting in bodily injury (Level 5 felony) and battery by bodily waste (Level 6 felony).

After a dispute between Leatherbury and another inmate, Officer James Oldham, a 12-year veteran of the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, was battered by Leatherbury, said sheriff’s department spokeswoman Judy Jackson.

Oldham was treated and released by medical staff, and has returned to work, Jackson said.

Leatherbury has been in the Bartholomew County Jail since November, when he was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court on an auto theft charge.
