William D. “Bill” Mitchell, 80, of Columbus, passed away at 12:55 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility after a short battle with cancer.

Born Jan. 17, 1937, in Columbus, Bill was the son of William and Mildred Mitchell. He married Shirley Hendrickson Dec. 27, 1957, and she survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Beth Ann (Kevin) Noblitt of Columbus; brothers, Donald Payne of Elizabethtown, John Mitchell of Mishawaka and David Michael Mitchell of Greensburg; and a sister, Mary Jane Trant of Jacksonville, Florida.

Bill graduated from Clifford High School in 1956. He was captain of the high school basketball team his senior year.

He was a former member of Clifford Christian Church and New Hope Christian Church.

He retired from Cummins Engine Company after 30 years of service.

After retirement, he worked for Armuth Farm Service, GTR Industries and Gene Nolan Racing.

Bill enjoyed gardening and traveling. He and Shirley traveled to 49 of the United States. A lot of their travel involved racing with their grandson, Jordan Hunter Noblitt.

Bill’s biggest enjoyment in life was being involved in Jordan’s racing career from the time Jordan was 7 until his death at the age of 22.

Bill had a fun sense of humor that will be missed.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sara Jean Ray; in-laws, Pat and Alice Hendrickson; and grandson, Jordan Hunter Noblitt.

Calling will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at Norman Funeral Home in Hope. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2017. There will also be an hour of calling prior to service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery.
