Traffic stop leads to two drug-related arrests

A traffic stop near East Legal Tender Road and County Road East 600S resulted in two arrests.

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Densford was patrolling in that area at 7 p.m. Monday after the sheriff’s department received complaints about suspicious activity, deputies said.

Densford saw a Chevrolet van go left of the centerline and stopped the vehicle, which was driven by Clarissa Powers, 38, Grammer, deputies said.

The deputy recognized a passenger in the van as Lovely Brown, 29, North Vernon, who had an active Jennings County warrant seeking her arrest, deputies said.

After arresting Brown, a Columbus Police Department canine was requested and alerted to narcotics inside the van, deputies said. When Densford asked Powers to get out of the van, he smelled marijuana on her person, deputies said.

Powers had a plastic baggie on the inside of her coat which contained marijuana and a marijuana cigarette, deputies said. A controlled substance was then located in a purse belonging to Lovely Brown.

Powers was arrested on a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana and has been released from the Bartholomew County Jail.

Brown was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of a controlled substance and an out-of-county warrant and was transported to Jennings County, deputies said.
