Local man arrested on multiple charges after chase

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a local man after he fled in his vehicle after a traffic stop.

Deputy Andrew Whipker stopped a vehicle driven by Jami Martin, 59, Columbus, at 9:43 p.m. Monday in front of the Clay Township Fire Department, deputies said.

During the traffic stop, Whipker noticed an odor of burned marijuana coming from the vehicle, deputies said. Martin then attempted to flee in his vehicle with deputies following westbound on 25th Street, and then northbound on to Taylor Road, deputies said. The pursuit continued on to Marr Road and then west on County Road 600N and south on to County Road 100E.

As the pursuit continued west on County Road 550N, stop sticks were placed at 550N and 100W by Deputy Andrew Dougan and Indiana State Tooper Jacob Tolle, deputies said.

Martin’s vehicle struck the stop sticks and stopped about a half mile west of the intersection, deputies said.

Deputies located methamphetamine and marijuana in Martin’s vehicle, deputies. said.

Martin was arrested on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and reckless driving, deputies said. He also received multiple traffic citations.
