Athletes of the Week – May 4

MALE

Julian Greenwell, Columbus East sophomore baseball player

Greenwell went 2 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs and picked up the pitching victory in an 11-5 win at Silver Creek. He also went 3 for 4 with an RBI in an 11-10 loss at Jennings County and 1 for 3 with an RBI in a 6-2 loss at Bedford North Lawrence.

His performance last week: “It really gave me confidence because I’ve been in a slump the past couple of weeks. Hitting a couple home runs helped me the next game, as well.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I usually listen to music and eat McDonald’s.”

Favorite drink: “Hi-C Orange”

Favorite food: “Chicken”

Favorite book: “’Hatchet’ by Gary Paulsen”

Favorite class: “Biomedical sciences”

Role model: “My dad (John Greenwell)”

Best advice: “Play every game like it’s your last.”

Athletics goal: “I’d like for us to win state this year. That’s always a goal.”

If you could travel anywhere: “California, because I’ve always wanted to go surfing.”

FEMALE

Aubrey Smith, Columbus North senior tennis player

Smith went 2-0 at No. 1 singles last week, winning both matches in straight sets in 5-0 victories against Greensburg and Franklin Central. She beat Greensburg’s Raegan Rigney 6-2, 6-1 and Franklin Central’s Addison Laker 6-0, 6-2.

Her performance last week: “I tried to work on my shots and make myself better by working on stuff I needed to since they were weaker teams.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I have a dynamic warmup routine that I do.”

Favorite drink: “Red Cream Soda”

Favorite food: “Anything that my grandma makes. She’s a really good cook.”

Favorite book: “I’m reading ‘The Lucky One’ right now, and I really like that.”

Favorite class: “English”

Role model: “My sister (former North and University of Indianapolis tennis player Allie Smith)”

Best advice: “Don’t underestimate yourself. Stay positive because sometimes you can go into a match doubting because the person is going to be better than you, but stay positive and know that you can win if you try your hardest and put your mind to it.”

Athletics goal: “I’m hoping to finish top four at state.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Somewhere tropical like The Bahamas or Aruba. I want to go somewhere that has clear blue water.”
