Brian’s picks – May 11

1) Cherie Lowe sports a beaming smile and a crown in her publicity shots. And well she should. The self-proclaimed Queen of Free seemingly has earned the moniker. She and her husband once paid off $127,000, and have been debt-free for years. She will present her couponing workshop, which she takes nearly everywhere, at 6 p.m. Monday. She will detail best places to find coupons and much more. It is, of course, free. Information: 812-379-1266 or mbcpl.org.

2) I am fascinated by the story, but haven’t yet seen “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” a true story about Antonina Zabinska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinska (Johan Heldenbergh). In 1939 Poland, they have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Germans, the couple is stunned — and forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist. The film is playing at the nonprofit YES Cinema, Fourth and Jackson streets. Information: yescinema.org.
