Event to celebrate community diversity

More than 20 area organizations are supporting a “Celebrating Our Diversity” ceremony and march Sunday, beginning from the steps of Columbus City Hall.

The march is planned at 4 p.m. to show support for the different ethnic, racial, religious and social groups in the area and provide information on how citizens can prevent and confront harassment and intimidation. Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop will read a proclamation before the march.

Participants will go to Fourth Street between Jackson and Washington Streets where they will hear more speakers representing local community organizations and diversity groups. The presentations will be interpreted for those who are hearing-impaired.

Tables will be staffed by members of supporting organizations for participants to learn how they can make the Columbus community more welcome to diversity.

The event is being conducted in conjunction with the United Nations World Day for Cultural Diversity, which is Sunday, and is sponsored locally by Standing Up for Racial/Social Justice. In the event of bad weather, the event will be inside The Commons.
