Toddler hurt in hit-and-run crash

Bartholomew County sheriff’s deputies are looking for a driver in a hit-and-run incident involving a 2-year-old.

Deputy Adam Warner was sent to the Elkland Mobile Home Park in the 4100 block of North Huffer Road in Columbus about an accident at 8:42 p.m. Monday, deputies said.

A toddler was playing in the front yard when she attempted to cross the roadway, and was struck by a vehicle that witnesses said was traveling at a high rate of speed, deputies said.

The driver, described as a thin white male with dark hair, briefly stopped and then fled the scene, deputies said. A passenger in the vehicle, who gave her identity to the child’s mother, has not responded to telephone calls asking her to contact investigators about the accident, deputies said.

The child was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital where she was treated and released for a fractured left foot, deputies said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s department at 812-379-1650 or at the tip line, 812-379-1712. Emails with information may be sent to [email protected] or [email protected].

Hope Police Department, Hartsville Volunteer Fire Department and Columbus Regional Hospital emergency services assisted at the scene.
