Lawrence A. “Larry” Brock, 85, of Columbus, died at 9:14 a.m., June 5, 2017, at Silver Oaks Health Campus.

Larry was born April 30, 1932, in Pekin, Indiana, the son of Aley and Susie Brock.

He married Loretta Leach Nov. 3, 1956, in Bloomington.

He was a 1950 graduate of Pekin High School and received a B.S. in education from Indiana University in 1954. He then earned a master’s degree in administration from George Peabody College, Nashville, Tennessee, in 1958.

Larry was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force upon graduation from Indiana University and was sent to Sampson Air Force Base in New York for orientation and training in September 1954. He went through pilot training and ended up at Tyndall AFB, Panama City, Florida, to attend, and then teach, radar controller school while putting in hours as a pilot.

He held teaching positions in Richmond and his first principal’s position in Centerville, Indiana. In 1965, he moved to Columbus to assume a position as principal at State Street School, and then later at the new Smith Elementary School. During the year it was being built, he was assigned to Elizabethtown and Azalia schools.

After 11 years at Smith School, Larry was asked to move to W.D. Richard’s School where he worked until his retirement in 1987. For three years after retirement, he and his wife managed Applegate Apartments. Larry later worked at the Lakeview Church of Christ where he was a member and elder for many years. In his earlier retirement years he was also a member of the Casa program in Columbus.

A time of visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Lakeview Church of Christ, just off U.S. 31 on 4040 North County Road 150W, with John Baughn officiating. Burial will follow in Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association through the funeral home.

He is survived by his wife and their three children, Linda (Michael) O’Krent of Austin, Texas, Michael (Yvonne) Brock of Greensboro, North Carolina and Brian (Karla) Brock of Georgetown, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Brock (Brittany) Henry, Grant Henry, Phillip (Marie) Brock, Ross Brock, Travis Brock, Katie Brock and Tanner Brock; and one great-grandchild, Madeline “Maddie” Nichole Henry.
