Stephen “Steve” Jewell Higgins, 79, of Martinsville, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017.
He was born in 1937 in Columbus, Indiana, to the late Herbert Higgins and Jeneive (Jewell) Beck.
Steve was a 1956 graduate of Columbus High School. He served his country from 1957-1960 in the United States Marine Corps, with overseas deployment that included Japan and Formosa. Upon leaving the service, Steve went to work at the General Motors Stamping Plant in Indianapolis, retiring in 1991 as superintendent after 30 years.
He was a member of the North Park Lodge #646 F. & A.M. and a 33rd degree member of the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite.
Survivors are his wife, Jayne Kay (Wiley) Higgins, whom he married on Jan. 27, 1962; son, Herb Higgins (Carrie) of Greenwood; daughter, Laura Higgins of San Francisco, California; grandchildren, Stephen, Haley and Hope Higgins, Kavan and Sam Speck; and brother-in-law, Richard Wiley of Columbus.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, mother and step-father, Rufus Beck.
Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2017, with services at 6 p.m. at Costin Funeral Chapel.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
