Vickers Drive on Air Park campus extension project to begin soon

A contractor has been hired to extend Vickers Drive on the Columbus AirPark campus.

The Columbus Board of Works on Tuesday approved a contract for up to $243,423 with Best Excavating of Westport that includes extending the road, building sidewalks and extending water and sewer lines.

The Columbus Redevelopment Commission in May approved spending up to $326,217.51 in Tax Increment Financing funds for the Vickers Drive extension project.

The improvements are expected to play a role in attracting restaurants and other retail businesses to the area, airport director Brian Payne said.

Construction will start as soon as a notice to proceed is approved by the Columbus Board of Works, which could occur July 5, said Heather Pope, city redevelopment director.

After construction is completed by Oct. 1, Payne said he plans to send out Request for Proposal material to developers as part of an effort to market the area.
