Smith honored by firefighter association

State Rep. Milo Smith, R-Columbus, has been named Legislator of the Year by the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association.

Smith received the honor June 16 during the organization’s annual state convention at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Columbus. The association gives the award to honor individuals of the Indiana General Assembly whose efforts and work support firefighters.

The organization cited the passage of House Bill 1370 that was authored by Smith that addresses the minimum basic training for volunteer firefighters before becoming involved in emergency response duties. It also grants police powers to a fire investigator who has successfully completed law enforcement training and meets other requirements, according to the legislation.

The bill, which was signed into law by Gov. Eric Holcomb, took effect July 1.
