Thomas C. Lockwood

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

Thomas “Tom” Charles Lockwood, 82, of Charlotte, passed away in his sleep on July 28, 2017. He was born in Rushville, IN to Luther A. and Louise Manley Lockwood on August 26, 1934.

Tom graduated from Central High School in Columbus, IN, where his father was Superintendent of Schools. He earned a B.A. in Finance from Indiana University where he was a Member and President of Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity and the Sphinx Club.

Upon graduation he joined Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, IN and served for over 45 years. In 1970, he had an opportunity to purchase an interest in Cummins Carolinas, the Cummins distributorship based in Charlotte which later became Cummins Atlantic. He served as CFO of Cummins Atlantic and as a Director of over a dozen privately held businesses during his career, including Shared Data Systems, Thermo King Central Carolinas, American Astronet and Keane Monroe.

Tom was a leader in his profession. He was a member of the Institute of Managerial Accountants and served as President of both the Charlotte Blue Chapter and the Carolinas Council, as well as two terms on the National Board of Directors and as National Treasurer. He was a member of Financial Executives Institute and served as President of the Carolinas Chapter and on the National Board. He also served on the Kappa Delta Rho Foundation Board and was recognized as a member of Ordo Honoris, the fraternity’s Hall of Fame for recognizing outstanding alumni. He was a longtime member of Carmel Country Club.

Most importantly he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. He enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events, musical performances and activities, as well as reading American history, gardening, cooking and attending Carolina Panthers games. He was committed to his faith as a member of Providence United Methodist Church for over 45 years and was a member of the Disciple I Bible study class.

He was predeceased by his parents; and brother, John M. Lockwood. Survivors include his wife of over 57 years, Charlotte Anne Williams Lockwood; sons, Luther A. Lockwood II (Jane) and Charles D. Lockwood (Cindy); and grandchildren, Jane B. Lockwood, Luther (Luke) Lockwood III, Thomas Charles Lockwood II, Grace Elizabeth Lockwood, and William Thomas Lockwood, all of Charlotte; and nephew, John F. Lockwood (Terry) and niece, Jo Van Shaw, both of Indianapolis.

Funeral services will be held at Providence United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on July 31, 2017. The family will receive friends in the church atrium immediately following the service. A private family burial will be held at Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial gifts can be made to the McColl Lockwood Lab for Muscular Dystrophy Research at the Carolinas Healthcare Foundation, Providence United Methodist Church or the Kappa Delta Rho Foundation.
