RIFLE SHOOTING

CSA student earns title in national competition

Eli Edwards won the Intermediate Junior High Power Overall Trophy at the National High Power Rifle Championships at Camp Atterbury.

Edwards, a senior at Columbus Signature Academy, also finished as the second Junior in the M1A/M14 Rifle competition and was just short of qualifying for the National Rifle Team.

Edwards holds several national and state records in High Power Rifle competitions.

Last year, he achieved Distinguished Air Rifle level in the NRA/Winchester Qualification Program and competed in the Indiana USA Army Marksman and Junior Olympic qualification competitions.

Edwards is hoping to join the rifle team at Air Force Academy.

Meanwhile, recent Columbus East graduate Charlotte Watts has received a scholarship from the Civilian Marksmanship Program to attend Indiana University.

Watts has been an active participant in the Hoosier Hills Youth Marksmanship program for the past three years.

She has attained an Expert skill level award in the NRA/ Winchester Qualification Program.

SWIMMING

Club Olympia takes 17th in state championships

Club Olympia, with its five age-group swimmers, finished 17th out of 84 teams in last weekend’s Indiana Long Course Age Group State Championships at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.

Nalanie Cortez won the High Point Award in the 11-12 girls Division. She won the 100-meter butterfly (1 minute, 7.77 seconds) and 200 freestyle (2:12.26) and finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:00.33) and 200 butterfly (2:31.68) and third in the 50 freestyle (28.01) and 400 freestyle (4:42.30).

Brady Beyer finished fourth in the 11-12 boys high point standings. He won the 50 breaststroke (34.68), 100 breaststroke (1:14.91) and 200 breakststroke (2:41.56) and finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:32.91) and seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:48.05) and 400 freestyle (4:54.88).

Misha Machavariani took second in the 10-and-under boys high point standings. He won the 200 IM (2:49.36) and finished second in the 50 breaststroke (42.93) and 100 butterfly (1:17.05), third in the 50 butterfly (34.90) and 100 breaststroke (1:30.78) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:31).

Pratt Badve finished 18th in the 11-12 boys 200 breaststroke (3:23.94), 23rd in the 50 breaststroke (41.15) and 26th in the 100 breaststroke (1:31.88). Daniella Preston was 20th in the 10-and-under girls 100 butterfly (1:33.18).

Meanwhile, two local athletes competed for Franklin Regional Swim Team. Albert Nusawardhana and Daniel Utterback qualified to swim for Team Indiana in this weekend’s Central Zone Swimming Championships in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.

Nusawardhaha finished eighth in the 13-14 boys 200 breaststroke and 10th in the 100 breaststroke. He also swam on the third-place 200 medley and 400 medley relays and fifth-place 400 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.

Utterback took eighth in the 100 butterfly; 11th in the 100 freestyle, 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle and 13th in the 50 backstroke.
