Humane Society raising funds for exercise facility

The Bartholomew County Humane Society has received an attractive opportunity but needs the public’s help over the next two weeks to take advantage of it.

An anonymous patron has agreed to match dollar-for-dollar whatever amount the Humane Society can raise to erect a new large dog-exercise area at the humane society shelter, 4415 E. County Road 200S, spokeswoman Cheryl Zuckschwerdt-Ellsbury said.

With an estimated cost of $10,000, the organization has already raised about $1,500. But in order to get the matching funds, organizers must raise the remaining $3,500 by Aug. 25, Zuckschwerdt-Ellsbury said.

One purpose of the 90- by 75-foot exercise area would be to allow families a chance to see how a prospective pet will interact with them when the dog is running free.

The facility would also provide larger dogs a place to exercise after being confined to a small kennel area most of the time, Zuckschwerdt-Ellsbury said.
