North player picked for festival

Columbus North freshman Austin Bode has been selected to play in the 2017 14U Perfect Game Select Baseball Festival Sept. 1 to 3 in Fort Myers, Florida.

Bode is one of 40 players nationally from his age group to be selected. The event will be televised nationally on Fox Sports.

SWIMMING

Local swimmers compete

Five local athletes swam for Team Indiana in the 2017 Central Zone 14-and-under Swimming Championships in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.

Club Olympia’s Nalanie Cortez finished fourth in the High Point scoring. She finished second in the 100-meter freestyle (1 minute, .38 second), 200 freestyle (2:11:51) and 400 freestyle (4:38.08); fifth in the 50 freestyle (28.11); sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:34.00); 12th in the 50 butterfly (30.89). She also swam on three runner-up relays for Team Indiana.

Misha Machavariani, also a Club Olympia swimmer, finished third in the 10-and-under boys 400 freestyle (5:12.83); sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:18.18), 200 freestyle (2:29.60 and 200 IM (2:47.65); seventh in the 50 butterfly (34.82) and 11th in the 100 breaststroke (1:32.56). He also swam on the third-place 200 medley relay team.

Club Olympia’s Brady Beyer finished second in the 11-12 boys 200 breaststroke (2:39.93), just four-tenths of a second off the state record. He also was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.68), fourth in the 50 breaststroke (35.51), 11th in the 400 IM (5:24.35), 17th in the 400 freestyle (4:54.22) and 18th in the 200 IM (2:38.72). Beyer swam on Team Indiana’s second-place 200 medley relay and third-place 400 medley relay teams.

Two Columbus residents who compete for Franklin Regional Swim Team also swam for Team Indiana. Albert Nusawardhana finished 19th in the 13-14 boys 200 breaststroke, and Daniel Utterback took 42nd in the 11-12 boys 50 butterfly.

Two Club Olympians win events

Fourteen Club Olympia swimmers competed at the 2017 Southern Indiana Divisional Championships at Franklin.

Erica Samuel won the Girls Open 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.91. She also finished second in the 500 freestyle (5:25.80), fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:22.79), sixth in the 100 freestyle (57.74) and 200 IM (2:23.17) and seventh in the 50 freestyle (26.85).

Aidan McAlister won the 13-14 boys 500 freestyle in 5:13.18. He also took seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:59.82), and eighth in the 100 freestyle (55.80) and 100 backstroke (1:03.85).

Ayush Panda finished second in the Boys Open 500 freestyle (5:04.32), fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:51.83), fifth in the 200 IM (2:11.38), sixth in the 100 freestyle (51.45), seventh in the 200 backstroke (2:14.92), and 11th in the 50 freestyle (24.31). Daniella Preston placed third in the 10-and-under girls 100 freestyle (1:10.69), fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:35.62), fifth in the 50 butterfly (37.80) and 200 IM (2:57.90) and eighth in the 50 backstroke (38.35).

Sydney Morlok took third in the 11-12 girls 100 butterfly (1:10.52) and 500 freestyle (5:57.81), seventh in the 200 IM (2:35.04) and 11th in the 50 butterfly (32.43). Alison Clauss (10) was fourth in the 10-and-under girls 50 backstroke (37.44), fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:20.39), 10th in the 200 freestyle (2:40.14), 14th in the 100 freestyle (1:14.51) and 16th in the 200 IM (3:09.56).

Pratt Badve (12) finished fifth in the 11-12 boys 100 backstroke (1:11.68), sixth in the 50 backstroke (32.96), eighth in the 200 IM (2:39.78) and 14th in the 50 butterfly (34.12). Blake Day took sixth in the 13-14 boys 500 freestyle (5:33.29) and 100 backstroke (1:03.61), seventh in the 200 backstroke (2:21.84), 12th in the 200 freestyle (2:05.76) and 13th in the 50 freestyle (26.17) and 100 freestyle (57.11) and 50 butterfly (32.43).

Riddhi Garg placed seventh in the 13-14 girls 100 backstroke (1:06.37) and 200 backstroke (2:23.17), 10th in the 200 IM (2:27.48) and 16th in the 200 freestyle (2:10.73).

Maggie Johnson returned to swimming just a few weeks before Divisionals after learning she had a serious medical condition shortly after the short course Age Group State Championships in March. Johnson progressed quickly enough to be able to swim in the meet and had personal-best times in two of her five events, placing seventh in the 13-14 girls 50 freestyle (27.01), eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:07.19), 14th in the 500 freestyle (5:50.59) and 16th in the 100 freestyle (59.36).

Maddie Beyer finished 11th in the 10-and-under girls 50 breaststroke (45.29), 13th in the 100 breaststroke (1:39.59) and 15th in the 200 IM (3:08.81). Arjun Bhadoria was 11th in the 11-12 boys 50 breaststroke (39.73) and 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:27.77).

Sanaa Kulkarni joined Beyer, Clauss and Preston 10-and-under girls units that placed seventh in the 200 medley relay and eighth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Sophomore in Futures event

Trinity Lutheran sophomore Rachel Sabotin, a Columbus resident who swims for Club Olympia, finished 12th in the 800-meter freestyle in 9:13.45 in the 2017 Futures Championships in Nashville, Tennessee.

Sabotin also took 14th in the 400 IM (5:08.67). She was 19th in the 400 freestyle (4:29.38) and 25th in the 200 IM (2:27.46).

VOLLEYBALL

Panthers drop openers

Jennings County’s seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball teams lost their season openers.

The eighth-grade Blue fell to St. Peter’s 25-8, 25-5. Emily Lane pounded two kills.

The eighth-grade White lost to Silver Creek 25-11, 25-18. Lucy Ernstes served one ace.

The seventh-grade Blue fell to St. Peter’s 25-5, 25-4. Abby McDonald recorded three digs, and Blakelee Birge had one assist.

The seventh-grade White lost to Silver Creek 25-11, 25-11.

The Jennings County seventh-grade football team dropped its season-opener to South Dearborn 36-0 on Tuesday.
