A downtown Columbus bakery was damaged by fire Monday after a passer-by saw flames inside the storefront.
Columbus firefighters were called to the Sogno Della Terra Bakery, 901 Washington St., at 11:15 p.m. Monday, said Capt. Michael Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.
Firefighters from Station 1 at 1101 Jackson St., which is about two blocks from the bakery, found a visible fire on top of a glass countertop, Wilson said.
The business was closed and the door was locked, so Battalion Chief Dan Cleland had firefighters go through a glass door and enter the bakery to make sure no one was inside, Wilson said.

Using a fire extinguisher, the fire was doused with a small amount of the water, and firefighters determined no one was inside the building, Wilson said.
Columbus fire and police investigators found evidence that a candle had been on the top of the glass counter near combustible materials, Wilson said. An investigation is continuing into the cause of the fire, he said.
Fire damage was isolated to the glass display counter and a fluorescent light directly above the counter, Wilson said. The building contains two businesses and six apartments, including an apartment directly above the bakery.
Damage to the bakery is estimated at less than $5,000, Wilson said. Firefighters cleared a small amount of smoke from the building. No injuries were reported.
