Alex McGill, Columbus North junior soccer player

McGill scored all three of the Bull Dogs goals in the Great Midwest Classic over the weekend. He netted two scores in Friday’s 2-1 win against McCutcheon and one goal in Saturday’s 1-1 tie with Downers Grove (Illinois) South.

His performance last week: “I think the team still has another level in them, and we can work together collectively to make sure we can make a run in the postseason.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “Drink a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie.”

Favorite drink: “Chocolate milk”

Favorite food: “Boneless chicken wings”

Favorite book: “Memory Keeper’s Daughter”

Favorite class: “Pre-Calculus”

Role model: “Cristiano Renaldo”

Best advice: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

Athletics goal: “To make it as far as I can playing the sport I love.”

If you could travel anywhere: “I would travel to England to watch the high-level soccer games that go on there.”

Lily Shelp, Columbus East senior golfer

Shelp carded an 82 Saturday at Elks Run Golf Course in Jeffersonville to tie for the day’s best score and lead the Olympians to a runner-up finish in the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament.

Her performance last week: “I was really happy with it. I had never played the course before, but I really liked it. My short game really helped me out a lot. Everything just kind of came together. I left a few shots out there, but for the most part, I played pretty well.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I always pray individually, and then some of the girls on the team and I do that together. Then, I do a special stretching routine, and I swing and (putt) on the practice greens.”

Favorite drink: “Lemonade”

Favorite food: “Sushi”

Favorite book: “The Fault In Our Stars”

Favorite class: “Medical terminology”

Role model: “My mom (Julie Shelp)”

Best advice: “Always stand up more times than you fall down.”

Athletics goal: “I really want to break 80 in sectional.”

If you could travel anywhere: “I want to go to Haiti on a mission trip.”
