Betty Jean Williams

NORTH VERNON

Betty Jean Williams, 94, of North Vernon, passed away at 10:22 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at Premier Health Care in North Vernon.

Born June 29, 1923, in North Vernon, Mrs. Williams was the daughter of the late Walter and Minnie Parker Powell. She married James B. Williams on September 6, 1952, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in North Vernon. He preceded her in death on March 7, 1991.

Mrs. Williams was a 1941 graduate of Vernon High School and worked in Medical Records for the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Center in Butlerville before retiring.

She was a member of New Freedom Baptist Church, the Quilt Club, and the Business Professional Women’s Club, all in North Vernon, and a several time recipient of Volunteer of the Year for the Jennings County Friends of the Library. She also volunteered at the Literacy Program at the Jennings County Public Library.

Mrs. Williams enjoyed quilting, sewing, volunteering at the Senior Center and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her sons, John (Debbie) Williams of Valrico, Florida, Alan Williams, Mark (Dawn) Williams and Bruce (Lori) Williams, all of North Vernon and Robert (Scarlet) Williams of Scipio; brother, William (Wendy) Powell of North Vernon; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Robert Powell; and great-grandchildren, Zachary Halloran and Tyler Monroe.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon with the Rev. David Brown officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, September 15, 2017, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the New Freedom Baptist Church or Our Hospice of Jennings County.
