Ward A. McCarty

Ward A. McCarty, 93, of Columbus died 10:15 a.m. Sunday, September 17, 2017, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Ward was born in Rochester, Indiana, June 17, 1924, the son of J. Murray and Henriyetta Ward McCarty. He married Norma Ogilvie and she survives.

He was a graduate of Indiana University and taught school for 22 years retiring in 1985 from Southport Elementary School where he taught fifth grade. He was a member of the Bible Church of Columbus, IU Varsity Club and Rochester Indiana Masonic Lodge. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

His great loves, besides his family, were IU football and basketball, golfing, Cincinnati Reds and wintering in Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Norma McCarty of Columbus; daughters, Mary Ann McCarty and her husband Tyrone Tuttle of Columbus and Tammy McCarty-Seymour and her husband Gary Seymour of Seymour; grandsons, Craig and Scott McCarty, Matt and Brett Boilanger; a great-grandchild, Camrin McCarty.

He was preceded in death by parents; son, Michael A. McCarty; and brother, John McCarty.

Funeral service will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Friday at Hathaway~Myers Chapel on Pearl Street with the Rev. Jerry K. Day Sr. officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Burial with military rites conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard will be in Garland Brook Cemetery.
