NORTH VERNON — A man and woman were arrested Sunday for robbery and burglary after North Vernon police received a report of suspicious individuals walking around apartments in the 200 block of FDR Drive. Officer Todd Fleetwood and Officer Scotty Willis saw two people, later identified as Malinda A. Birge, 26, Dupont and Terry A. Birge, 22, North Vernon, who ran away from them but were caught after a short foot chase, said Sgt. Andrew Richmond, North Vernon Police Department spokesman.
The officers found the two had masks and a bag of items, Richmond said. Some of the items belonged to two robbery victims who had called in about the incident shortly before the two were stopped.
The victims told police that two suspects entered their apartment on FDR drive and displayed a firearm, and struck one person with it before leaving with some of the victims’ belongings, Richmond said. The victims were taken to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital for treatment and released.
Officers recovered two masks, gloves and two pellet guns from Malinda A. Birge and Terry A. Birge, Richmond said.
Malinda A. Birge was arrested on preliminary charges of robbery, burglary, battery, theft and resisting law enforcement, Richmond said. Terry A. Birge was arrested on charges of robbery, burglary, battery, intimidation, theft and resisting law enforcement, Richmond said.
