‘Keep up the good work’

I was a reporter for The Republic between 1980 and 1987. Harry was managing editor back then.

Harry and Stu Huffman hired me for my first job after I completed my M.A. program in journalism at IU. The two of them and City Editor Joe Gill taught me more about journalism than I ever learned at IU.

Three months after I started the job, someone (who shall remain nameless) came into the newsroom, went into Harry’s office, and closed the door. He proceeded to complain about my reporting and said that I wasn’t being fair to him. And he asked Harry to fire me.

I sat at my desk, figuring I would soon be out of work.

When the man left, Harry called me into his office and said, “Keep up the good work.”
