42-year-old female inmate at county jail dies; state police investigating

COLUMBUS, Ind. — The death of a 42-year-old female inmate over the weekend at the Bartholomew County Jail is being investigated by Indiana State Police.

Jail staff in Columbus responded to a cell after an inmate, Angela L. Blair, 42, of Elizabethtown, was apparently in need of medical attention, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, public information officer for the State Police Versailles post, referring to initial investigative information.

As the jail staff arrived at the cell and spoke to Blair, she collapsed and became unresponsive, Wheeles said.

The jail staff immediately provided her with medical treatment and called an ambulance from Columbus Regional Hospital, Wheeles said. Attempts to revive Blair were unsuccessful, however, and she was pronounced dead by the Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office, he said.

State troopers were called to the jail at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Wheeles said.
