Passenger arrested after traffic stop over license plate

A North Vernon woman was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana charges after she was accused of causing a disturbance during a traffic stop.

Columbus police stopped a vehicle near Central Avenue and Laurel Drive at 12:45 a.m. Thursday, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

While the officer was trying to speak with the driver about the license plate, one of the vehicle’s back seat occupants, Rachel A. Cardoso-Nelson, 28, of 306 Hoosier St., North Vernon, began to complain loudly about being the vehicle being stopped, Harris said.

A short time later, Cardoso-Nelson was observed with her body partially outside one of the rear car door windows as she continued to yell at officers, Harris said.

Cardoso-Nelson was ordered several times to lower her voice, however, she refused to do so and was taken into custody, Harris said. Officers later located a small amount of marijuana in one of the woman’s pants pockets, Harris said.

Cardoso-Nelson was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana. She was released from jail after posting $7,000 bond, jail officials said.
