No students on board when bus, car collide

A Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. bus was involved in a minor property-damage accident as it prepared to stop and pick up a student.

No students were on the bus when the accident occurred Monday at Fourth and Sycamore streets, in the vicinity of St. Peter’s Lutheran School, said Lt. Matt Harris, spokesman for the Columbus Police Department.

At about 7:40 a.m., the driver approached a stop sign and merged into the right lane, said Karen Wetherald, Bartholomew Consolidated transportation manager. The back end of the bus hit the rearview mirror on the driver’s side of the car, as well as the front bumper, although the bus suffered no damage, Wetherald said.

When an accident such as this happens, the bus is brought in for inspection, when the driver fills out an incident report, Wetherald said.

A drug test is required only if children are on the bus at the time of an accident, so a test was not needed for this incident, she said.

Other school buses helped and picked up children along the route to get them to school, Wetherald said.
