South Decatur gets first win of season

VERSAILLES — South Decatur picked up its first boys basketball win of the season Saturday night, a 43-40 upset at South Ripley, giving former Jennings County coach Kendall Wildey his first victory with the Cougars.

South Decatur (1-7) led 38-28 early in fourth quarter before the Raiders went on a 12-0 run to take a 40-30 lead. But then the Cougars tied the game, and Matt Cornett hit a 3-pointer to win it.

Columbus Christian falls

CANNELTON — Columbus Christian led 39-29 early in the third quarter, but Cloverport (Kentucky) rallied for a 72-65 win in the consolation game of the Cannelton Shootout.

C.J. Reed led the Crusaders (4-8) with 20 points. Josh Jones added 18, and Conner Emily had 16.

Columbus Christian lost its semifinal game to Whitesville Trinity (Kentucky) 73-46. Emily scored 21 points, and Kyle Foster added 10.

Lancers rally falls short

MONROVIA — Edinburgh rallied from a 13-point deficit and had a chance to win in the closing seconds, but missed a layup, and Monrovia converted two free throws to hold on for a 44-41 win.

Christian Cox led the Lancers (4-4) with 15 points. Coltan Henderson added nine.

Owls topple Panthers

SEYMOUR — Jennings County was within 25-19 at halftime, but Seymour outscored the Panthers 22-3 in the third quarter and went on to post a 65-37 Hoosier Hills Conference win.

Aaron Martin, Lane Lauderbaugh and Weston Miller all scored seven points for the Panthers (1-4, 0-2). Travis Wilson added seven points and 11 rebounds.

WRESTLING

North goes 2-3

ST. LEON — Columbus North went 2-3 in the East Central Super 6. The Bull Dogs fell to Rushville 42-36 and Lawrenceburg 53-15; beat Cambridge City Lincoln 48-9 and Batesville 54-18; and lost to East Central 61-15.

Morgan Smith (106), Keandre Watson (126), Brigham Kleinhenz (170) all went 5-0 for North. Tay Wells went 3-0 at 195.

Also for the Bull Dogs, Tyler Williams went 3-2 at 113. Thomas Hancock went 2-1 at 160.

Panthers take fourth

JEFFERSONVILLE — Jennings County finished fourth out of 19 teams in the Jeffersonville Classic. Oldham County (Kentucky) won the title, followed by Bloomington South and Jeffersonville.

Victor Antunez (120) and Dalton Craig (132) won their respective weight classes for the Panthers. Brooks Wathen (152) and Zane Bieneke (170) each finished second, while Teagan Johnson (106) took third and Xavier Barberis (126) was fourth.

SWIMMING

North drops dual meets

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North dropped double-dual meets against a pair of powerhouse teams in the Christmas Classic at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.

The Bull Frog boys fell to Fishers and Bloomington South by identical 60-42 scores. The North girls lost to Fishers 88-13 and Bloomington South 67-31.

Evan Patterson led the boys with wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 44.04 seconds) and 100 freestyle (47.80). Sam Russell took the 100 breaststroke (1:01.06).

The girls were led by third place finishes from Betsy King in the 50 freestyle (25.43) and Olivia Morlok in the 500 freestyle (5:20.01).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Crusaders lose twice

CANNELTON — Columbus Christian fell to Cannelton 67-32 in the semifinals and Cloverport (Kentucky) 50-34 in the consolation game of the Cannelton Shootout.

Sarah Lorimor led the Crusaders with nine points against Cannelton. Kayla Jones added six points and 10 steals.

Jones led Columbus Christian (1-6) with 14 points and eight steals against Cloverport. Grace Lorimor added 10 points and 16 rebounds.
