Letter: Quit smoking in new year

From: Kylee Jones

Tobacco Awareness Coordinator, Healthy Communities/Columbus Regional Health, Columbus

The new year is a great time for fresh starts. If you’re a tobacco user, the best thing you can do is to make a plan to quit. Smoking is still the No. 1 cause of preventable death in Indiana. Making the decision to quit in 2018 can dramatically reduce your risk for life-threatening diseases and even make all of your holiday meals taste better.

Quit plans:

  • Combine quit-smoking strategies to keep you focused, confident, and motivated to quit.
  • Help identify challenges you will face as you quit and ways to overcome them.
  • Can improve your chances of quitting smoking for good.

A trained quit coach can help with a quit plan. Free, confidential help is available at 1-800-Quit-Now or QuitNowIndiana.com.

Tobacco-cessation classes are also offered locally by Columbus Regional Health. For more information, call 812-375-3194. The next class session begins Jan. 10.

Make 2018 your best year yet by making the decision to quit.
