Shoplifting incident leads to arrest

A local man was arrested on drug possession charges after he was accused of stealing a set of headphones from a Columbus store.

Columbus police officers were sent to Walmart at 735 Whitfield Drive at 4:30 p.m. Sunday about a man attempting to steal headphones.

Layne M. Schwartz, 26, Columbus, was observed trying to hide behind a vehicle in the store parking lot, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. When officers found Schwartz, he refused to remove one hand from his pants pockets. Schwartz was arrested and officers determined there was a valid trespass warning from Walmart for him, Harris said.

Officers recovered the stolen headphones from Schwartz and also located heroin and methamphetamine in his wallet and pants pockets, Harris said.

Schwartz was arrested on charges of possession of heroin, possession of methamphetamine, theft and trespassing, Harris said.
