CPD arrests wrong-way driver on U.S. 31

Columbus police arrested an Edinburgh man early Sunday after he was observed driving northbound in the southbound lanes of U.S. 31 and nearly striking a CPD patrol car attempting to stop him.

Officer Danielle Stigers attempted to stop a vehicle at 4:40 a.m. Sunday driven by Johnnie K. Streeval, 52, after it nearly struck her patrol car and sped past her at a high rate of speed, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Stigers was able to stop Streeval at U.S. 31 near Market St., Harris said. Streeval refused all field sobriety tests as well as a blood test, Harris said.

Officers received a search warrant for the blood test and after that, took Streeval to the Bartholomew County Jail, Harris said.

Streeval was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction within five years and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .15 percent or greater, Harris said.
