Driver arrested after hitting porch of Columbus home

Columbus police arrested a local man after he was accused of striking a support pillar on a front porch on a home on Reo Street.

Officers were sent to the accident at 10:30 p.m. Sunday where they found Angel Mendoza, 51, of 32 Reo St., behind the wheel of a 2009 Jeep SUV, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers said Mendoza was staggering and having trouble maintaining his balance when exiting the vehicle, Harris said. Officers said Mendoza was so intoxicated that they had to use a wheelchair to get him into a hospital exam room at Columbus Regional Hospital, Harris said.

Officers secured a search warrant for a blood draw and Mendoza was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license, Harris said.

Mendoza was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $7,500 bond, jail officials said.
