Robert E. Smith

LAFAYETTE

Robert E. Smith, 93, of Lafayette, passed away on Sunday morning, March 11, 2018 at IU Health Arnett Hospital.

He was the son of the late Walter A. and Mary (Goodwin) Smith, born on April 29, 1924 in Beech Grove.

Robert’s marriage of 70 years was to Ethyl M. Smith on March 22, 1943 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and she preceded him in death on March 17, 2013.

Robert honorably served his country in the United States Army, Navy, Airforce, and Indiana Air National Guard. He was range supervisor for Indiana Air National Guard bombing range at Camp Atterbury.

Formerly, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service.

Robert loved traveling and was an epic story teller.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 233 where he was a past commander. Robert also belonged to the Franklin Lodge F&AM 107.

He leaves behind two sons, Vincent (Georgette) Smith of Atlanta, Indiana, and Gregg (Cindy) Smith of Clatskanie, Oregon, four daughters, Sherry (Dan) Butcher of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Penny (Lee Schisel) Carmichael-Shaffer of Valders, Wisconsin, Karen (Chris) Adams-Gay of Valparaiso, Indiana and Lisa Papesh-Evans of Bloomington; one sister, Marjean Cole of Indianapolis; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at Hippensteel Funeral Home, with a masonic service at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 16, 2018 also at Hippensteel with Celebrant Chris Dodson officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors by the United States Air Force and the American Legion Post 11.
