Brian’s picks – March 15

1) I read and loved “A Wrinkle In Time” when I was only a sixth-grader, and before time brought its share of wrinkles. Madeleine L’Engle’s science fantasy novel was huge among students in my central Kentucky school, and I imagine the new star-laden movie playing at YES Cinema in Columbus will create a whole new audience for the book. You can see for yourself, and know that your support of YES — especially when you hit the concession stand — also supports a myriad of programs linked to Lincoln-Central Neighborhood Family Center locally. Information: yescinema.org.

2) Organizers of Developmental Services Inc.’s Annual D-Vine Wine and Beer Festival from 1 to 7 p.m. March 24 at The Commons regularly have said the event is more about socializing and support of DSI’s mission than any party-hearty atmosphere. But when you note the independence that nonprofit DSI has given so many people with intellectual and other disabilities, you must agree that’s success worth celebrating. Besides a variety of drinks, sandwich-style snacks will be available. Tickets: $20 in advance online (a small processing fee will be added) at dsiservices.org/dvine or $25 at the door.
