Letter: How interested are we in student safety?

From: John Adkins

I’ve been contemplating the editorials, articles and previous letters to the editor on keeping Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. students safe. I’ve also been reflecting back on my 30-plus-year career in fire/EMS.

I find myself asking several questions. Some I can answer, some I can’t. The questions I’ve been asking myself this morning:

  1. How many school shootings have there been in Bartholomew County?
  2. How many teenage drivers have died in vehicle crashes?
  3. How many teenagers have died in house fires?
  4. How many teens have committed suicide?
  5. How many teens have overdosed?
  6. If the totals for questions 2 through 5 are larger than for No. 1, why haven’t we done anything about it?
  7. If we haven’t done anything toward working on No. 6, are we truly interested in student safety?
