Edinburgh man hit, choked woman

A man was arrested Wednesday morning after a woman reported he had choked and hit her in a Franklin hotel room.

Matthew T. Durbin, 32, of Edinburgh, was arrested on charges of domestic battery, strangulation and criminal confinement.

A couple staying at a Franklin hotel near Interstate 65 called police around 3:30 a.m., saying that a man in a nearby room was beating a woman, a Franklin Police Department report said.

A hotel guest told police that he had heard a woman screaming at someone to stop hitting her and along with sounds of someone being hit. When he went to the door of the room and opened it slightly, he saw Durbin grab the woman to stop her from leaving the room, the report said.

The woman told police that she had returned from a trip to a nearby gas station. Durbin, who had been asleep, accused her of cheating on him, pinned her to the ground, and hit and choked her, the report said.

Durbin told police that he didn’t know what had happened and that he had not been in a physical alteration with the woman, the report said.

The woman declined medical treatment, the report said.

Durbin, 151 S. Workman Drive, was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail. He was held without bond.
